Incandescent lava at sunset and after dark
A golden-hour ascent to 2,300 m above the Valle del Bove to watch the lava flow at sunset, descending by night with headlamps.
The most scenic trek: departing in the afternoon from Piano Provenzana, after a short transfer to Rifugio Citelli (1,800 m), you climb for about 2.5 hours to a viewpoint at 2,300 metres overlooking the Valle del Bove.
There, as the sun sets, you watch the incandescent lava flow grow brighter as darkness falls. This is Etna at its most powerful and hypnotic.
The descent happens at night, by the light of headlamps, returning to Rifugio Citelli around 10:30 pm. Lava visibility depends on current volcanic activity: every day the guide chooses the safest, most spectacular route.
